I have a question for people familiar with the details of ASIC firmware operation. Judging by yesterday’s attempt to achieve Kaspa’s record for transactions per second, we currently have a situation where the block space is being used quite inefficiently, even with a sufficiently rich mempool: due to a (quite a large) portion of transactions being duplicated across different blocks. In my opinion, the degree of duplication is noticeably higher than one would expect if transactions were being randomly and timely selected from a pool of the size we had for most of the experiment. From my perspective, one reason for this could be that miners request a mining template update too infrequently from the node. They thus continue mining atop an old template that contains transactions already accepted by the ledger since a certain moment. They could avoid this if they updated their mining template after the node received every newly discovered block. So, the question is: how often do different ASICs actually update their mining templates? Is it possible to configure this parameter within the firmware, or do we need to launch a public initiative to push hardware manufacturers to release newer firmware for their devices that accounts for the new realities post-Crescendo? Because before Crescendo, you could get away with manually requesting a new block template from the node once, at most twice a second. Post-Crescendo, that approach is completely obsolete. Miners now need to either subscribe to the node's template update notifications (which should be possible afair, the node provides some notification mechanism for it), or query for a template update a minimum of 10 times per second. Or perhaps it would be simpler to contact the alternative firmware developers and propose that they implement this improvement. Their firmware would then become objectively more profitable to use, if only because the blocks, produced by equipment running that firmware, would contain higher transaction fees due to a greater chance of including transactions that are unique to that specific block.
